Australia Day 9 Magnetic Island at the southern tip of Great Barrier Reef
Flew from Sydney to Townsville then took ferry to Magnetic Island, where I was met by Walter, the husband of the B&B owner, Myra, in the little green mini Moke which I am using all over the island (scary for me, as it is old, stick shift, left hand side of the road and all that). Staying in a cabin at the back of their property, surrounded by rock wallabys, cockatoos, kookabarras, magpies, etc. Had a cabin guest last night, I affectionately call him Geck-Man and I think he loves me (yes, beyond pathetic). I'll post his photo tomorrow. Anyway, back to the story... so I fed the wallabys (and the lorikeets this morning), toured the wild tropical gardens, learned how to propagate pineapples and bananas, then hopped on the bike and headed to Horseshoe Bay where I gathered minature sandollars (adorable) and walked the bay. Met a wonderful family of 5 from Devon, England - the Waldrons - who are taking a 7 month trip as a family (!) around the world (rather unscheduled and trying to stay with friends as much as possible) - kids are 21, 18 and 16 - and we had lunch as well as dinner together. Their picture is attached and they were absolutely charming... all of them. I hope they venture into piedmont NC when they make it there in March so that they can stay with me. My mini moke's battery went dead after dinner, so they jump started it for me and even drove it home, with me following in their regular car - so it helped immensely. Today will be hiking and touring and the weather is perfect.

What are those animals that you're feeding? Hmmm, we need to do better than Geck-man! How nice that the Waldrons adopted you for the day. Can't imagine taking a 7-month trip around the world, but it does give me ideas.
ReplyDeleteWhy do they call it Magnetic Island?
ReplyDeleteAre the animals in the photo the rock wallabies?
You are so mesmerizing...imagine that this family gave you their own nice vehicle, and took over your pathetic mini moke. Bat, bat...
Love you! -w
