Australia Day 10 Magnetic Island

After being Bird Lady and feeding the Rainbow Lorikeets before breakfast, Mini Moke and I drove to hike the Forts (where they defended Townsville during WWII) and saw a koala in the wild!  So cute - they sleep 20 hours a day but the French and German tourists and I may have awakened him and he gave us a sleepy nod and went back to snooze.  Afterwards, I went bay hopping and visited Radical (gorgeous - best one of all), Florence, and Arthur Bays.  Since I'm terrified of the box jellyfish, I wore my thin skin (thank you Heidi & Steve!) and swam to my heart's content.  Ok, so I only thought that I looked like Cat Woman, but I'm anonymous here so what does it matter?  I rescued a 25 year old Dutch boy who got lost making his way to one of the bays.  Cat Stevens songs rang through my head as I briefly considered introducing myself as Maude, and asking if his name was Harold, but my sanity reigned.   Tonight will be a pub dinner, reading my new favorite book ever (thank you Jane!) - Calamity Physics - and perhaps meet even more Europeans... they believe that a proper holiday is spending 6 months touring and find my mere 5 weeks as not much at all.
Tomorrow morning is a long bus ride to Cairns, but it should have lovely views.
p.s. Isn't Geck Boy adorable?

  1. I knew that given a few tourists, a dodgy car, and an assortment of wild animals you would fit right in here. Well the Euros know what they are doing Kathryn......just ring home and say you're staying another 6 months. I mean, that's only one island, you've got at least another 600 to do in the Whitsundays alone. Go Catwoman!!!

  2. I'm awfully glad to see that you finally managed to figure out how to post a comment here (probably Ben and Maddy advised you!) You are so right - 6 more months would be fabulous... there are lots more islands and bays to explore! KCB

  3. Is that bird sitting on your head?! Bird lady, koala in the wild, rescuing a young European man - the saga continues! How long will you REALLY be staying?

  4. Are you sure the song wasn't by Simon & Garfunkel and you were Mrs Robinson and he was Benjamin Braddock?

  5. Twenty-five and Dutch - with another 6 months to do nothing but tour? Life could be worse.
